It was only a matter of time before the talk of Attorney Bill Barr resigning got to a point where it could no longer be ignored.
Democrats have called for the resignation of near everyone in the administration of President Donald Trump from the day he became president.
But the calls for Barr’s resignation reached a fever pitch after his Justice Department intervened in the sentencing recommendation off former President Trump associate Roger Stone.
Former Rep. Trey Gowdy, a Fox News contributor, also expressed his displeasure in what the DOJ did, but he also defended Barr.
“I’ve had the same position whether it was Barack Obama or Donald Trump: I do not think the chief executive should be weighing in ongoing investigations or criminal prosecutions,” he said.
Democrats were furious with three tweets by President Trump. Two where he said that Stone’s sentencing recommendation was too harsh and another where he congratulated Bar for getting involved.
“Is this the Judge that put Paul Manafort in SOLITARY CONFINEMENT, something that not even mobster Al Capone had to endure?” he said, “How did she treat Crooked Hillary Clinton? Just asking!”
“Who are the four prosecutors (Mueller people?) who cut and ran after being exposed for recommending a ridiculous 9-year prison sentence to a man that got caught up in an investigation that was illegal, the Mueller Scam, and shouldn’t ever even have started?” the president said.
But then Barr changed the recommendation to something more reasonable and the president was thrilled.
“Congratulations to Attorney General Bill Barr for taking charge of a case that was totally out of control and perhaps should not have even been brought. Evidence now clearly shows that the Mueller Scam was improperly brought & tainted. Even Bob Mueller lied to Congress!” he said.
As Gowdy said on Fox News, Barr did not need the president to say a word as he was aware of what the recommendation was.
“I can tell you this: Bill Barr was aware of this recommendation before President Trump ever tweeted a single syllable, a single character. So the notion that Barr was somehow motivated to move because of this tweet is just factually wrong,” Gowdy said.
“The notion that Barr should resign is about the dumbest damn thing I’ve ever heard,” he said.
“If a United States Senator really believes that the head of the Department of Justice cannot weigh in on what a proportional sentence is…” he said. “There are child pornographers, people who rob banks who do not get nine years.”
But they do not want to punish Stone for the crimes he was convicted of. They want to punish him for the crime of helping President Trump.
