Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez often boasts about her “power” on social media and how her Twitter following “proves” she is the leader of the Democratic Party.
But a ruling from a liberal appeals court against President Donald Trump has resulted in Ocasio-Cortez getting hit with a bombshell lawsuit.
As reported by Fox News, former Democratic New York Assemblyman Dov Hikind filed a lawsuit against Ocasio-Cortez in federal court on Tuesday for blocking users on Twitter based on their personal viewpoints.
Here’s what Hikind said in a statement:
“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has blocked me on Twitter yesterday apparently because my critique of her tweets and policies have been too stinging. Just today the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a ruling that elected officials cannot block individuals from their Twitter accounts, thereby setting a precedent that Ocasio-Cortez must follow. Twitter is a public space, and all should have access to the government officials on it.”
“It’s unclear if Ocasio-Cortez is aware of this ruling or not, but either way, I have decided, after speaking with my legal counsel, to initiate a lawsuit against her for blocking me and a host of other public figures. Ocasio-Cortez is acting cowardly and should be ashamed of her attempts to silence me. I’ve done nothing but address her ignorance and disregard for the truth. She constantly brags about the millions of followers she has but is afraid of my speech. She is a hypocrite. I’m looking forward to the day where she has to unblock me so that free speech in America is guaranteed even when it offends!”
The lawsuit came hours after the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Trump is legally prohibited from blocking users on Twitter.
The liberal federal appeals court ruled that because Trump uses his personal Twitter account to communicate with the public about his administration, all users have a First Amendment right to see his tweets.
This anti-Trump ruling resulted in AOC getting hit with the lawsuit because she has been blocking conservative outlets and reporters on Twitter for quite awhile.
The Daily Wire’s Ryan Saavedra was blocked by Ocasio-Cortez back in April after he called her out for seemingly using a fake southern accent while speaking to a predominantly black audience.
Reporter Harry Cherry told Fox News that Ocasio-Cortez blocked him on Twitter after he called her a “moron” following her remarks comparing migrant detention facilities to Nazi-style concentration camps.
YouTube star and NY-11 Republican Congressional candidate Joey Saladino also announced this week that he is planning to file a separate lawsuit against AOC following the appellate ruling, saying she blocked him after he announced his candidacy in May.
“I’m suing AOC because we need to be able to have a strong and vigorous debate between the parties, otherwise our fragile system of ideas and representation breaks down,” Saladino said in a statement.
He added: “Though she is not in a position of power, she is the voice of her generation of Democrat voters, and bigger than some of the Presidential candidates.”
The lawsuit also notes that Ocasio-Cortez has blocked The Daily Caller and One America News host Liz Wheeler, both of which were critical of the New York socialist on social media.
The anti-Trump ruling from the liberal federal appeals court now means that Ocasio-Cortez is in violation of the U.S. Constitution and must unblock all of these users.
She will also be prohibited from blocking users just because she doesn’t like what they are saying.
Amazing to see how one anti-Trump ruling just backfired so badly that AOC just got hit with a lawsuit.
