For almost three years, former President Barack Obama has sat back and stewed over President Donald Trump dismantling his disastrous legacy.
But Obama has finally determined that now is his time to get revenge. But he just did the one thing that will probably cost every Democrat in the 2020 election.
Immediately after the tragic shootings last Saturday in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, the former president went public to attack Trump and demand mass gun control.
Pushing for gun control will backfire badly on Democrats trying to beat Trump in the 2020 election.
While Obama did not cite President Trump’s rhetoric specifically, he called Americans to “soundly reject language coming out of the mouths of any of our leaders that feeds a climate of fear and hatred or normalizes racist sentiments.”
He also criticized rhetoric meant to “demonize those who don’t look like us” or suggest that immigrants were “sub-human” or threatened the American way of life.
Obama indicated that rhetoric, such as the kind Trump voiced, was the root of the worst moments in human history — citing Jim Crow laws, the Holocaust, Rwanda Genocide, and ethnic cleansing in the Balkans.
“It has no place in our politics and our public life,” he wrote. “And it’s time for the overwhelming majority of Americans of goodwill, of every race and faith and political party, to say as much — clearly and unequivocally.”
He added, “Until all of us stand up and insist on holding public officials accountable for changing our gun laws, these tragedies will keep happening.”
“We should soundly reject language coming out of the mouths of any of our leaders that feeds a climate of fear and hatred or normalizes racist sentiments; leaders who demonize those who don’t look like us, or suggest that other people, including immigrants, threaten our way of life, or refer to other people as subhuman or imply that America belongs to just one certain type of people,” Obama wrote.
In El Paso, at least 20 were killed and over a dozen more injured after a deranged shooter carried out an attack at a local Wal-Mart.
In Dayton, at least 10 were killed and more were injured by a gunman.
It’s certainly chilling to see that immediately after the two mass shootings that rocked the nation, Obama immediately went public to push his gun-grabbing policies.
But more importantly, Democrats do not want the 2020 election to be a Trump verse Obama contest.
In 2014 and 2016, Obama tried to shame voters by explicitly stating that his legacy and agenda were on the ballot.
Democrats were routed in both elections, especially in 2016, when Trump handily defeated Hillary Clinton.
Now, it appears Obama wants Democrats to use his playbook for 2020 –and we all know how that will play out.
