Delaware Democrat Senator Chris Coons confessed in a recent statement that radicals in his party are overplaying their hand. And there’s no way that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wanted Coons to admit this one fact on live television.
During an interview on “CNN’s Newsroom,” Coons was asked about Democratic presidential candidate Robert “Beto” O’Rourke declaring “hell yes” that he wants to confiscate “assault-style rifles” legally owned by Americans.
At the third Democratic debate in Houston last week, O’Rourke said he would use the office of the presidency to order the government to confiscate “assault-style rifles” from Americans who have the legal right to own them.
When asked about those comments, Coons broke with his party — which is demanding extreme gun-control measures — and confessed that O’Rouke’s statement was “wrong” and that he did not agree with it.
“His [O’Rourke] statement will be played for years at 2nd Amendment rallies with organizations that try to scare people,” Coons warned.
“I frankly, think that that clip will be played for years at 2nd Amendment rallies with organizations that try to scare people by saying Democrats are coming for your guns. I’m a gun owner,” Coons added.
He continued, “My sons and I have gone skeet shooting and hunting, and frankly, I don’t think having our presidential candidates, like Congressman O’Rourke did, say that we’re going to try and take people’s guns against their will is a wise, either policy or political move.”
Coons is completely right to say that O’Rourke’s comments will be played for years to millions of Americans who support the Second Amendment.
And there is absolutely no way that Schumer wanted Coons to admit that.
During the debate O’Rourke made his contempt for the U.S. Constitution more than clear.
“Some on this stage have suggested a voluntary buyback for guns in this country,” ABC News host David Muir said in comments directed to O’Rourke.
“You have gone further. You said, quote, ‘Americans who own AR-15s and AK-47s will have to sell them to the government, all of them.’ You know the critics call this confiscation. Are you proposing taking away their guns and how would this work?”
O’Rourke declared that as president, he will take away guns that he described as “designed to kill people on a battlefield.”
“Hell yes we are going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” he declared amid an even stronger eruption of applause. “We are not going to allow it to be used against fellow Americans anymore.”
O’Rourke added: “I want to say this: I am listening to the people of this country. The day after I proposed doing that, I went to a gun show in Conway, Arkansas to meet with those who are selling AR-15 and AK-47s, and those who are buying those weapons. And you might be surprised, there was some common ground there. Folks who said, ‘I would be willing to give that up, cut it to pieces. I don’t need this weapon to hunt, to defend myself. It is a weapon of war.’ So let’s do the right thing, but let’s bring everyone in America into the conversation – Republicans, Democrats, gun-owners and non-gunowners alike.”
