After months of sham hearings, partisan witnesses, and still no evidence President Donald Trump did anything wrong on his July phone call with the Ukrainian president, House Democrats officially voted on impeachment.
The Democrat-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed both articles — obstruction of Congress and abuse of power — against Trump.
Now, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is refusing to transmit the articles to the GOP-Senate — and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is about to end it.
In a fiery speech from the Senate floor, McConnell says the Senate will not proceed with a trial until House Democrats “muster the courage” to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate, ending speculation that he might hold a trial even without the articles.
Pelosi wanted McConnell to agree to her terms about how a Senate trial should be run, and he made it clear she is not calling the shots.
He criticized House Democrats for their “slapdash investigation” and “Trump derangement syndrome” that involved ignoring due process and standard legal procedures in their haste to impeach President Trump.
“And then, just before the holidays, this sad spectacle took another unusual turn: As soon as the partisan impeachment votes had finished, the prosecutors began to develop cold feet. Instead of sending the articles to the Senate, they flinched,” McConnell said. “That’s right: The same people who’d just spent weeks screaming that impeachment was so serious and so urgent that it could not even wait for due process now decided it could wait indefinitely while they checked the political winds and looked for new talking points.”
At the conclusion of his speech, McConnell said:
Their turn is over. They have done enough damage. It’s the Senate’s turn now — to render sober judgment as the framers envisioned. But we can’t hold a trial without the articles. The Senate’s own rules don’t provide for that. So, for now, we are content to continue the ordinary business of the Senate while House Democrats continue to flounder. For now.
But if they ever muster the courage to stand behind their slapdash work product and transmit their articles to the Senate, it will be time for the United States Senate to fulfill our founding purpose.
Democrats are complaining about McConnell possibly holding an unfair investigation, but that’s literally what Democrats just did for three months.
When Democrats hold Soviet-style trials and limit the other side from having any say at all — there’s no problem at all.
But before the impeachment trial likely moves into the Senate — Democrats are whining, issuing ridiculous demands, and already claiming the process is “rigged.”
Pelosi and Democrats shouted for months in front of every camera that Trump must be impeached to protect the country.
Now, they aren’t so urgent anymore. Pelosi is refusing to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate, which is her constitutional duty.
They have accused Trump of just about everything imaginable, and after months of wasting taxpayer dollars to hold impeachment hearings, they still can’t prove the president did anything wrong.
And McConnell has already revealed exactly what’s going to happen when the impeachment trial moves into the Senate.
