Democrats are losing their minds now that the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump is over, and they just got horrible news.
The president confirmed the Democrats’ worst nightmare when he said that he and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell are moving forward with more federal judges.
Just after the president was acquitted on Wednesday, McConnell filed motions to move ahead, calling for votes on five more of Trump’s judicial nominees.
“Working with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, thank you Mitch, and his colleagues in the Senate we have confirmed a record number of 187 new federal judges to uphold our Constitution as written,” Trump said. “This includes two brilliant new Supreme Court justices; Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.”
And because of a recent rule change is done by Republicans that only allows for two additional hours of debate after district court judges get past an initial procedural hurdle.
The first vote is set for Monday to end debate on Judge Andrew Brasher’s nomination to the 11th Circuit.
After that, the next judges teed up include Matthew Schelp, Joshua Kindred, Philip Halpern, and Joshua Kness, all of whom could be fit in next week due to the new rule.
If they are all confirmed by the Republican Senate, as they are expected to be, it will bring the total number of judges confirmed from 2017 to 192.
Democrat strategist James Carville, who helped in the 1992 election of former President Bill Clinton, said that Democrats are doomed in judicial nominations if Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is the party’s nominee for president.
“Sanders might get 280 electoral votes and win the presidency and maybe we keep the House. But there’s no chance in hell we’ll ever win the Senate with Sanders at the top of the party defining it for the public. Eighteen percent of the country elects more than half of our senators. That’s the deal, fair or not,” he said in an interview with Vox.
“So long as [Senate Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell runs the Senate, it’s game over. There’s no chance we’ll change the courts, and nothing will happen, and he’ll just be sitting up there screaming in the microphone about the revolution,” the strategist said.
But Carville believes the entire party is doomed if someone like Sanders were to be the Democrat nominee for president.
“We have candidates on the debate stage talking about open borders and decriminalizing illegal immigration. They’re talking about doing away with nuclear energy and fracking.
“You’ve got Bernie Sanders talking about letting criminals and terrorists vote from jail cells. It doesn’t matter what you think about any of that, or if there are good arguments — talking about that is not how you win a national election. It’s not how you become a majoritarian party,” he said.
The Democrats should be used to it. They have been losing daily since Election Day 2016 and they are going to continue to lose on Election Day 2020 and beyond.
And now Trump and McConnell are going to keep rubbing salt in the wound.
