With everything going on in the D.C. swamp with Democrats trying to remove President Donald Trump from office, it’s hard for many Americans to actually see real news taking place in other parts of the country.
This is especially true given in the past six months, several lawmakers have died — some cases are more gruesome than others.
And that tragically continued this week when a top Democrat from Pennsylvania died after serving as a lawmaker for years.
As noted by local outlet The Morning Call, Fred P. Rooney, Jr., a former congressman from Pennsylvania, has died at the age of 94.
A WWII veteran, Rooney served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in France. He also managed John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign efforts in Lehigh Valley and brought Kennedy to Moravian College two weeks before the 1960 election.
“They just don’t make them like him anymore,” nephew .J. Rooney said. “He made the world a better place.”
State Rep. Robert Freeman described the late congressman as a hard-working and well-liked figure in Democratic circles who worked his way up in Washington.
Rooney leaned on friendships and connections he made to bring in major names to the Northampton County Democratic Committees annual dinner, landing headline names like former Sens. Walter Mondale and Ted Kennedy.
“He was highly thought of by the Democratic Party in the Lehigh Valley,” Freeman said.
By the end of his congressional tenure, Rooney was a high-ranking member of the Transportation Committee with a specialty on railroad issues. Freeman credited Rooney with helping to convince SEPTA to extend service into Bethlehem.
This is just one of many lawmakers who has died lately.
An Arkansas woman has been charged with killing former Arkansas state Sen. Linda Collins, who was found dead outside her home.
Rebecca Lynn O’Donnell has been accused of: (1) stabbing a former Republican lawmaker to death; (2) abusing the corpse of the dead lawmaker; (3) tampering with evidence; (4) and removing security cameras from inside Collins’ home the day before the murder occurred.
O’Donnell was arrested in June, less than two weeks after police found Collins dead outside her home from multiple stab wounds.
Earlier this month, Republican State House Representative Jay Powell was found dead at a resort in Georgia.
Powell’s death was unexpected and is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigations in Georgia.
The cause of death for the 67-year-old lawmaker is still unknown, which has only fueled suspicions.
Reports are suggesting that he actually died late on Monday night, and that he was not found until Tuesday.
Powell, who had been in office since 2008, was the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and also sat on several other committees.
It’s pretty sad — and revealing — that several of these stories have been largely ignored by the mainstream media.
